This is a little odd, the Alamo is surrounded by large commercial buildings. It's an oasis of sorts, a historical oasis surrounded by advancing progress. The last picture is that of the Long Barrack. Aside from the stone wall, this is the first portion of the historic structure I see.

Given its sorted, storied history, it's amazing The Alamo is still standing. Since its creation in 1744, the former mission has changed ownership many, many times and has gone through a series of states, from mission to fortress to ruins to Army depot to near oblivion to resurrected tourist attraction. It was during the sight's fortress period that it gained its fame and place within American history. It was here in 1836 that the Battle of the Alamo occurred, a bloody 13-day siege between rebel Texan and Mexican forces.

Click here for more detail and pictures of my tour of The Alamo.

After touring The Alamo I decide to do a little van maintenance before leaving San Antonio. First I get my oil changed then, while eating some Mexican at Taco Cabana, I have Discount Tire rotate my tires.

Awww, there she is, all happy with new oil and reshuffled rubber.

It looks like I have a lot of driving in store for me this afternoon and evening. Tomorrow I wish to tour Carlsbad Caverns National Park near Carlsbad, NM. In an effort to close the gap, I'll trek over 350 miles to Pecos, TX.

Most of my drive today will be on Interstate 10, ho hum.
