If there ever was to be a monster in my hiking closet, this one would certainly be one of them. Now, visible from its earlier hiding place behind a tall pile of hiking socks and boots, this monster will guide me up Mount Marcy, the highest peak in New York State. Marcy is at the zenith of New York's mountain statistics, standing tall at 5280 feet. I've experienced this 1 mile elevator of altitude enjoyment once before, years ago hiking with my friend Bill.

After some reflection, the length of today's hike is more worrisome than its height. 15 miles is a long way to walk, especially considering my last hike was about a month ago in the Badlands, and even then those hikes were Mickey Mouse 1 milers. On top of that, I just rode 60 miles on my road bike yesterday. Good God, I certainly won't be holding my breath today for any accusations proclaiming that I'm a genious. Rather, accusations of being an idiot are more in order. But, I like being the underdog, it provides me the coaxing I need to step up to the task.

Well, I've arrived at the hiking trailhead. Listen... hear that? The trail and its colorful fall foliage beckons us. So, come on, let's start this long distance hiking adventure!
