ORANGE  PROTECTION

I encountered this in Vancouver, BC. For some reason the owner has strung orange plastic fencing around all his trees. There were more trees in the backyard that were ringed with fencing as well. I'm not sure why the fencing was there. Maybe to protect the trees from squirrels but couldn't they jump into the protected trees from a tree not on the property? I don't think it protects against insects. So why? I'm totally perplexed. So what do you think?
