While visiting Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury, VT, I run across what looks like a cemetery in the distance. It seems odd that such a place is located so close to an ice cream factory. And that's strange, many, many people are milling around the gravestones. What's going on here?
Could it be it's a dangerous business making ice cream? Is this an employee graveyard? I suppose one could freeze or suffocate to death trapped in an ice cream cooler. And it's possible to crack one's head wide open slipping in a puddle of melted ice cream. And I could believe a worker could die from a heart attack as a result of an out of control weight problem, caused by working in quality control as an ice cream taste tester. The list goes on and on. But as I approach the graveyard, all theories are thrown out the window, this graveyard is Ben & Jerry's Flavor Graveyard.
The graveyard is packed with many gravestones. As I make my way from one plot to the next, I wonder why there's so much flavor carnage. I suppose creating new flavors is not a complete science, there's always going to be a certain element of risk when rolling out new flavors to the masses. The masses aren't always predictable despite one's best efforts ya know. So how do they devise their new flavors? I'm not sure, but I hope my up-and-coming factory tour will shed some light on all that. But first things first, I have come to pay my respects to the dearly departed flavors.
