Graceland
Memphis, Tennessee

Wednesday, November 10, 2004

In front of the home of Elvis at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee you'll find this expansive brick and stone wall that's filled with uncountable fan tributes and well-wishes, all scribbled and scrawled onto every conceivable nook and cranny. While visiting Graceland, I'm a little surprised to see this, figuring such a display would be frowned upon by whoever owns the Graceland Estate. The fan graffiti is not only on the wall, it has also migrated to the sidewalk and a nearby light pole as well.

Periodically, Graceland has special events where thousands of folks flock to Memphis from near and far. It's probably during such events that the wall receives most of its graffiti. I can't imaging trying to keep a horde of people with markers and sign paint at bay if they wish to leave their mark for Elvis.

Elvis was a pretty extravagant character. Some portions of the Graceland Mansion are certainly over-the-top, so, why not leave the wall to the fans to post their over-the-top enthusiasm and love for the King of rock and roll. The end result is certainly a head-turning, eye-catching spectacle, much like Elvis himself.
