Beale Street
Memphis, Tennessee

Wednesday, November 10, 2004

While walking down Beale Street in Memphis, TN I encounter a large mural advertising Michelob Beer. Pausing to take in the sight, my attention eventually focuses on the mural's belly button. On its own and without the context of the woman's body, I swear it looks like a mouth. It's a talking wall!

If only walls could talk. If this one could, it would spin interesting stories and tales of historical Beale Street. Back in the day, Beale Street was a rough-and-tumble place, filled full of interesting characters and escapades. The area frequently took on a carnival atmosphere where drinking, gambling, prostitution, voodoo, and murder thrived amidst the busy nightclubs, restaurants, pawnshops, theaters, and lively music.

Yes, if walls could talk. On the events of today, it would tell tales of really good-looking, well-traveled men, who stop to admire the feminine mural, who take pictures and write about it on the web. Oh, wait, I'm talking about myself now (minus the really good-looking part, of course). Well, if this wall could talk, I suppose I'd be just one of its many stories.
