Located on Mount Desert Island along the scenic coast of Maine, Acadia National Park is a true gem of the National Parks System. One of the smaller national parks, it is comprised of only 47,000 acres but don't let that fool you. It's the third most visited national park in the country. People come from all around to experience its pink granite mountains, clear lakes, and green woodlands.
One of the park's namesakes is its extensive carriage trail system. Build by John D. Rockefeller Jr. between 1913-1940, the 40 miles of motor-free byways is a great place to hike, bike, or take a leisurely carriage ride.
While I visit the park I plan to hike up Cadillac Mountain, road bike the Park Loop Road, mountain bike a portion of the carriage road system, witness a sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain, then tour the famous Bass Harbor Lighthouse.
So, hop in the van, I'm just about to enter Acadia National Park.
