Bass Harbor, Maine

Someone actually lives in the lighthouse. Robert Burchell and family. Here's a laundry list of do's and don'ts they've posted to protect their peace and privacy.

Some miscellaneous artwork.

Okay folks, I'm all informationed-out, time to start my photo tour. On the way to the lighthouse I pass by this old oil house. Built in 1902, once a place of kerosene storage, the building is located a safe 205 feet away from the lighthouse. Due to the raising cost of whale oil ($2.25 per gallon) the government was forced to switch to highly flammable kerosene. Apparently no fire has ever broke out, nothing was mentioned about any conflagrations on the information board.

I walk down to the lighthouse for a look around. Once there I immediately notice the scarlet red lens high up in the tower, apparently this is one of the few things that hasn't changed over time. Once red, always red.

Near the base of the light tower I see two bells on display. A big one and a smaller one. The "active" bell that actually rings to keep the sailors safe and sound is out in the ocean somewhere on a buoy.
