VISITING  CARLSBAD  CAVERNS

Carlsbad, New Mexico

Tuesday, November 16, 2004

Rise and shine! Er... well, lacking shine at least I'll try to make the best of my rising. The good news is it isn't raining... yet. No matter, I'll be spending most of my day underground, exploring the deep, dark recesses of Carlsbad Caverns.

Here's the Wal-Mart in Pecos, TX, my campground and temporary home away from home. "We Sell For Less" is their motto, "Satisfaction Guaranteed" is another. Most folks either love Wal-Mart or hate Wal-Mart. And then there are individuals like me who are torn. I don't much like Wal-Mart, don't shop there if I can help it, but I do love to overnight in their parking lots. So, what does that make me? A bad person? A conflicted person? I'm not sure, should I feel bad about parking in such a place?

Wow! Apparently I'm not alone, there are loads of RVs parked here this morning. I wonder, do they struggle with the same love/hate Wal-Mart thing as I do?

After pondering the whole Wal-Mart thing over a quick breakfast I hit the road. My driving today will take me north out of Texas to Carlsbad, New Mexico. Near there I'll find the object of my sightseeing desire, Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

A drive through the northern outskirts of Pecos, TX serves up rather dismal scenery. God, I'd hate to have to live here in the winter months.
