Lake Placid, New York

The combined track is gigantic and boasts a relatively new multi-million dollar luge/skeleton track as well as an older bobsled run.

After passing through the entrance I decide to take a looksee at the new luge/skeleton facility.

As I make my way up the mountain, my first impression of the track is it hasn't been completed yet.

The yellow foam material applied to the bottom of the track (used to help insulate the track from heat sources) looks exposed and vulnerable. As you can see, not only did it make an impression on me, I made an impression on it but not on purpose. Thinking it was hard as rock, I place my hand in it and end up leaving behind my handprint. Oops, sorry.

There are a number of exposed refrigeration lines that seem vulnerable as well. As I find out later, the track is indeed not completely finished. Fortunately, it is just minor stuff that doesn't prevent the track from operating. One of the things they have plans to do is to cover up the refrigeration lines otherwise people might stand on them during the events. Probably partially covered by snow, the spectators wouldn't have a clue what they're standing on. As for the yellow insulation, by design it's supposed to be exposed.
