Lake Placid, New York

After enjoying the view I make my way back down the mountainside. At the bottom there's this large visitor center.

Two bobsleds, a skeleton sled, and a luge sled are on display. Imagine sliding down the track on either the skeleton or luge sleds, pulling 5 g's and reaching speeds up to 90 mph. Yeah, I can, but only in a nightmare.

There is a virtual reality simulator that mimicks the bobsled, alpine skiing, ice hockey, ski jumping, and luge. There is also a video loop covering past Winter Olympics.

Outside the visitor center is this map of the bobsled run. It looks pretty old, like it was made in the 50's or 60's. Originally the bobsled run was 50% longer, I don't know why 1/2 mile was chopped off. Hmmm, maybe I should have gone on the trolley tour after all? Oh well. I'm sure the internet holds that factoid somewhere, perhaps the ORDA website URL I supplied earlier has it. You may have noticed by now that my tours are predominately visual in nature. While on the road I really don't have time to suppliment my site with too many facts. I figure I can do that when my trip is over.
