"Features throughout the Norris Geyser Basic can undergo dramatic behavioral changes simultaneously. Clear pools may become muddy and boil violently, and some may temporarily become geysers. Geysers may cease erupting or have altered cycles. New features may enlarge."

"This sudden activity is know as a 'disturbance' and can last a few days or more than a week. Gradually, most features return to 'normal'."

"Why this happens is not fully understood. Features here may be served by multiple plumbing systems at varying depths. The lack of extensive sinter buildup around the surface vents may allow more recycling of hot water into the plumbing system. Further study will help unravel the mystery of this phenomenon and lead to a greater understanding of the earth's hidden geologic forces."

Wow, now that was a mouthful. Pretty interesting information though. Let's start walking the trail, shall we?

Near the trailhead I pass by the Norris Museum. Its goal is to educate the public on the dynamics of hydrothermal geology.

This was Bathtub Spring. Thinking back to my college days, I can see how this looks a little like the bathtub I had to share with two housemates. For your benefit I'll go no further into its description.

I'll first walk the Porcelain Basic, followed by the Back Basin.

Here's a view of the Porcelain Basin. "Porcelain Terrace Overlook provides an overview of this delicate and dangerous basin. The ground here actually pulsates from the pressure of steam and boiling water beneath the surface. Its features appear and disappear more often than any other hydrothermal area. No one knows for sure why. Even so, some springs and geysers have become relatively stable features on this vibrant scene."
