Central Maine Coast

Riding inland from the ocean, my riding turns into an uphill grind. To take my mind off things, I turn my attention to the forest which slowly grows more dense and interesting as I pedal along. Soon I pass underneath an ornate carriage road bridge which is part of the park's extensive carriage road system. Apparently this bridge and all the others that sprinkle Acadia National Park were designed personally by multi-millionaire philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr.

I finally reach the southern end of Jordan Pond and am greeted by the Jordan Pond Gate Lodge and one of the carriage road entrance gates.

Yup, the entrance gate indeed leads to a carriage road, as attested to by this equestrian calling card.

After some uphill climb I breakout into sunshine and get a lofty eyefull of Jordan Pond. The road here doesn't offer much of a shoulder so I have to be extra wary of traffic.

Jordan Pond is quickly swallowed by the forest as I pass by its western shore.
