At the top I venture a closer look at the shelter house and weather station.

The shelter house was built in 1937-1938. There's an associated tunnel system that supports an elevator shaft and horizontal tunnel that runs from the lower reaches of the elevator through the mountainside out to the parking area near Whiteface Castle.

The shelter house's exterior is all stone and mortar.

Back in the 1930's they had the foresight to install a wheelchair ramp allowing sight access to the handicapped. On second thought, the ramp was probably built to accommodate President Roosevelt who needed access to the site during the dedication ceremony mentioned earlier. I could be wrong about that but I'm too lazy to research it. With that decision am I risking the loss of my photojournalism credentials?
