Clingmans Dome Observation Tower
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Sunday, November 7, 2004

Hovering 54 feet above Clingmans Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park you'll find this interesting observation tower. Pulled straight from a Jetsons cartoon, the tower's futuristic design looks a lot like a flying saucer that's been permanently docked to a tall concrete pillar and spiral entrance ramp. The observation deck provides a 360-degree, unobstructed view of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains which majestically straddle the state border between Tennessee and North Carolina.

Looking at the tower from a distance, thoughts of scientific fantasy flood my mind. Imagine, if you will, the existence of a hidden actuator somewhere on the observation deck. Just as in the Hollywood action movie, Total Recall, when Quaid (Schwarzenegger) places his hand upon an alien handprint activation switch to start a massive martian oxygen generater, you trip a similar actuator. The observation deck suddenly rumbles to life. Quickly detaching from the concrete support pillar and access ramp, the concrete spaceship is born anew and is now free to fly its spectators around the Smoky Mountains.

Now, THAT would be a tour worth paying for!
